Maybe one reason nobody collects their pension in Torchwood is that grown-ups won't fall for the recruitment pitch. There's a reason the army drafts 18-year-olds. I like the way Gwen remembers the younger self that would have died for him, but has moved beyond that, and the way she can remember everyone she's lost without tearing herself up any more. This impressed the hell put of me when I read it in WIAD, and it still hits hard.
