To me, real drama is this - the conflict, the confusion and the complexity of Ianto surviving and having a hand in destroying the 456 and in Stephen's death: yes, I could easily have seen CoE ending this way, and good God, would I be looking forward to the ramifications in series 4.

As much meta and debate that COE has spawned, I think a storyline like this would created even more. The real COE ending was bleak and basically created a blank slate. But this alternative ending begs so many questions about the future - I'd much more interest is a S4 if this is what had preceded it.
