Notes: spoilers for 2x11 "Adrift"
The water prickles cold for one heartbeat; then it turns warm like hot chocolate. He swallows it, wraps his arms around himself. The shaky first heartbeat, a shakier second, and the slowest third: he opens his eyes.
There is only darkness.
Something catches him around the middle, draws him up and away. He flails until his limbs hit sharp edges when water becomes cold air. Waves gurgle in his chest.
"Why?" An exhaled breath that isn't his, pain.
He sobs like a child, his face buried in a military coat, lips sucking the water from the fabric. "I miss it."
